David Burnell — Biography

SERVICE. COURAGE. FAITH. THE LIFE BEHIND THE STORIES.

David Burnell is an author, decorated U.S. Air Force veteran, instructor, rescuer, entrepreneur, and humanitarian whose life has been shaped by service, preparation, and experiences in some of the world's most challenging environments. Drawing on more than four decades of military service, professional training, personal protection, emergency rescue, and humanitarian work, David shares real stories and hard-earned lessons about courage, resilience, leadership, faith, and our responsibility to one another.

U.S. AIR FORCE VETERAN

David served in the United States Air Force from April 1984 through October 1994, during the final decade of the Cold War. His military service earned him the Meritorious Service Medal and the prestigious John Levitow Award. Following his military career, he continued developing his expertise in personal protection, self-defense, emergency preparedness, and rescue operations. A national taekwondo champion and experienced rescue diving instructor, David devoted much of his professional life to helping others develop the awareness, discipline, judgment, and practical skills necessary to respond effectively when circumstances become dangerous.

SEARCH & RESCUE

Search and rescue has defined much of David Burnell's life, from wilderness operations and technical rescue to dive rescue and underwater search and recovery. Starting with the Pennington County Search and Rescue Team while serving in the U.S. Air Force, David became a rescue diving and public safety SCUBA instructor, training others to operate in dangerous underwater environments. His experiences, including hazardous under-ice operations, reinforced the importance of preparation, judgment, discipline, and knowing when to withdraw. For David, rescue has never been about personal recognition. It is about the missing person, the family waiting for answers, and the responsibility to bring someone home without risking additional lives. The mission is never about the rescuer. It is about the person who needs to come home.

URBAN WARFARE CENTER

In 2002, David founded the Urban Warfare Center, a specialized training facility he operated for ten years, often at his own expense. The center provided realistic, scenario-based training for military personnel, law enforcement officers, security professionals, and others preparing for high-risk assignments. His approach emphasized that genuine preparedness requires more than physical ability or technical knowledge. It demands sound judgment, emotional control, adaptability, and the discipline to recognize when to act and when to stop. These principles became the foundation of much of his writing on personal safety, leadership, decision-making, and human performance under pressure.

HUMANITARIAN MISSIONS

David's experiences have also taken him to disaster zones, remote communities, and humanitarian missions worldwide. He participated in relief and recovery efforts following the devastating 2010 earthquake in Haiti and the 2011 earthquake and tsunami in Japan. In 2012, he traveled into Burma to work with Karen medics during a humanitarian training mission. Alongside these international experiences, his involvement in demanding rescue and recovery operations has brought him face-to-face with extraordinary courage, profound loss, unexpected kindness, and the remarkable resilience of the human spirit. Many of these encounters have become the inspiration for his most personal writing.

AUTHOR AND STORYTELLER

Although David has been writing for nearly four decades, his publishing work has expanded significantly in recent years. His books range from practical guides on self-defense, survival, emergency preparedness, and leadership to accounts of military history, humanitarian missions, rescue operations, and personal experiences. His short-book series, The Stories That Stay, preserves meaningful true stories and explores the lasting lessons they reveal. Whether explaining how to recognize danger before it becomes an attack or recounting an experience that changed his understanding of faith and compassion, David writes with a straightforward purpose: to turn experience into knowledge that others can use and lessons they can carry into their own lives.

The Stories We Carry. The Lessons We Leave Behind.

Through his books, podcast, teaching, and creative work, David continues to share the experiences and principles that have shaped his life. He believes that some of our most important lessons come not from what we accomplish, but from the people we encounter, the challenges we endure, and the choices we make along the way. His mission is to preserve those stories, honor the people behind them, and offer readers something meaningful that may help them prepare for difficult circumstances, find strength through adversity, or recognize an opportunity to help someone else.
