The Weight We Carry begins with a real recovery mission in Fremont Lake, Wyoming, where David Burnell descended into cold, high-altitude water to help recover two men and a downed aircraft from roughly 120 feet below the surface.

When one of the bodies began to come loose from the wreckage, David chose to extract him before he could be lost in water more than 600 feet deep. Once freed, the body’s weight began pulling David downward. He did everything he had been trained to do, but still could not stop the descent. Faced with the choice to let go or hold on, he held on.

Then another diver reached him, added the lift David could not generate alone, and helped them rise.

Years later, David came to see that moment as more than a rescue lesson. It became a spiritual one. We all carry weight. Some of it is ours to bear—responsibility, commitment, love, and the people who depend on us. Other burdens, such as anger, guilt, regret, and resentment, can slowly pull us down.

Through the experience, David came to understand that there are moments when our own strength is not enough. That is where grace enters. Just as another diver provided the lift he could not create for himself, the Savior offers strength, peace, and help when we reach the limits of what we can carry alone.

The Weight We Carry is a true story about knowing what to hold onto, what to let go, and how faith in Jesus Christ can help us rise when the weight becomes too much.
