The Climb is the story of a mountain journey that became a lesson in pain, purpose, discipleship, and the way Jesus Christ walks with those who struggle.

Years after a .45 caliber round struck David Burnell’s ankle during a training exercise, leaving him with permanent pain, numbness, and limited mobility, he stood at the base of the Middle Teton with his son and a group of young men. He knew he would not be the strongest or fastest climber. What he did not know was that the injury that slowed him down would place him exactly where he needed to be.

As the climb became harder, David fell behind the faster members of the group and found himself walking beside others who were struggling. What began as a physical limitation became a lesson about staying with people, adjusting your pace, and refusing to leave others behind.

Meanwhile, the strongest climbers moved far ahead and missed a critical turn, ending up miles off course. The slower group remained on the correct path, revealing one of the book’s central truths: there is a difference between moving quickly and moving in the right direction.

When snow and ice made the final ascent unsafe without proper equipment, no one reached the summit. But David came to understand that the summit had never been the true purpose of the climb. The real lessons were found in the steps, the pauses, the people who stayed together, and the wisdom to know when continuing was no longer the right choice.

Those lessons ultimately pointed him toward the Savior, who does not move past the weak, wounded, or struggling. He stays with them.

The Climb is a faith-centered reflection on pain, endurance, service, judgment, grace, and discipleship. It is for anyone who has ever felt slowed down, left behind, uncertain of the path, or wondered whether their limitations still have purpose.

One step. One choice. One purpose. Until we reach Him.
