The Burma Mission: Faith, Fire, and the Boy Who Followed Me is a deeply personal account of humanitarian service, hardship, faith, and the unexpected relationships that can change the meaning of a mission.

Drawing from David Burnell’s 2012 work among the Karen people of Burma, the book follows a journey into remote communities where resources were scarce, conditions were difficult, and preparation mattered every day. David went there to teach practical medical and field skills, but what stayed with him most were the people he met and the lessons they carried.

Among those memories is the story of a young boy who began following David through the village, quietly appearing again and again as the mission unfolded. What seemed at first like a small detail became one of the experiences David would remember long after he returned home.

Through stories of training, scarcity, service, cultural connection, danger, humor, and faith, The Burma Mission explores what it means to enter another person’s world with the intention of helping—and to discover that you may be the one who comes home changed.

At its heart, this is a story about service without spectacle, faith under difficult conditions, and the people whose presence becomes part of us long after the mission is over.
