Each day, an elderly man appeared near the place where David and his team were working. He had little by the world’s standards. His body showed the effects of age and hardship, but his dignity remained intact. Over time, David learned that the man had once served as a scout for the British Army.
What began as an encounter with poverty became something much deeper.
Through the story of this man, David reflects on dignity, dependence, gratitude, agency, generosity, the widow’s mite, and the uncomfortable truth that none of us is truly self-sufficient. Whatever we possess rests upon gifts, opportunities, circumstances, and grace we did not create entirely for ourselves.
