Fight Through: Inside the Combat Stress Program examines what happens when fear, uncertainty, fatigue, responsibility, and pressure collide—and what people can learn from those moments about leadership, survival, and human performance.
The Combat Stress Program was developed and taught inside the Urban Warfare Center, which David Burnell founded in 2002 and operated for ten years. The Urban Warfare Center became the environment where David could study, test, refine, and teach the principles behind performance under pressure with civilians and professionals from law enforcement, military, federal, and security communities.
Drawing from that decade of work, Fight Through explores how people respond when stress begins to affect judgment, communication, physical performance, perception, and decision-making. The focus is not on eliminating fear, but on understanding it well enough to keep functioning when circumstances become difficult.
David examines the relationship between preparation and performance, the way stress changes perception, why people sometimes freeze or make poor decisions under pressure, and how realistic training can expose weaknesses before the consequences become real. He also looks at leadership, trust, responsibility, resilience, recovery, and the role instructors and leaders play in helping individuals and teams remain focused when conditions deteriorate.
The lessons in this book were not developed in a classroom alone. They were shaped through years of practical training inside the Urban Warfare Center, where pressure, decision-making, human behavior, and performance could be observed in controlled but demanding environments.
Fight Through is written for leaders, first responders, military and public-safety professionals, instructors, organizations, and anyone interested in how human beings perform when the pressure becomes real.
At its core, the book is about learning to remain useful when fear is present, decisions matter, and others may be depending on what you do next.
