Bad Gods: A Bodyguard in Medieval Haiti is a firsthand account of danger, instability, survival, and the strange collision of modern security work with a place that could at times feel centuries removed from the world outside it.
Drawing from David Burnell’s experience working in Haiti, the book explores the realities of operating in an environment shaped by poverty, political uncertainty, violence, fragile infrastructure, superstition, and the constant need to remain alert. What begins as a protection assignment becomes a deeper encounter with a country where ordinary assumptions about safety, authority, medicine, transportation, and daily life can quickly fall apart.
David writes from the perspective of a bodyguard and field operator, but the story reaches beyond security work. It is also about culture, resilience, fear, faith, human dignity, and the difficult decisions people make when normal systems no longer provide protection.
The title reflects the almost medieval conditions David sometimes encountered, where rumor, belief, danger, and survival could exist side by side in ways that were difficult to understand from a distance.
Bad Gods is part field memoir, part survival account, and part reflection on what it means to remain useful, observant, and grounded when the environment around you becomes unpredictable.
